Guide to Guildleves

Update: The article below is just a brief introduction to Guildleves. I’ve since then come across this guide. If you haven’t got it already – I recommend the first thing to do is head over and get yourself a copy. Not only does it have a much more detailed and up-to-date chapter on Guildleves, but an amazing leveling guide as well (see my review). I could have saved myself a lot of trial and error with this (then again, I wouldn’t have written this blog post and you wouldn’t be here…).

Square Enix has continued to leave their trademark on the RPG gaming world. In the fourth quarter of 2010, Square Enix will revolutionize the MMORPG genre with their next generation installment of Final Fantasy XIV.

Final Fantasy XIV is a MMORPG and is set in the world of Eorzea. Players familiar with the Final Fantasy series will recognize elements that were previously used in the Final Fantasy XI game. Many jobs, skills, and races are graphically similar but are named differently. Players will be able to select from five playable races with highly customized traits that will set avatars apart from each other. One standard aspect of MMORPGs is the task of questing. Characters travel to new lands within the game to complete tasks to gain experience, notoriety, or items.

In Final Fantasy XIV, questing takes a more centralized approach with Guildleve. Guildleve is an area where players can gather and obtain a mission from an NPC. The NPC will give information to the player regarding a particular quest. The player accepting the quest will have the option to select the difficulty as well. Although Square Enix is attempting to make the game more solo friendly, Final Fantasy XIV Guildleve missions will also reward team play as well. Players will be able to select missions that have a matched difficulty to the amount of people in their party. Parties can range from one person solo to eight people party. Missions will require a specific task to be completed in order for success.

The purpose for Guildleve, is to allow players with varying times to make the most of their time in Eorzea. In the previous Square Enix MMORPG, players could sit for hours idle due to the complexities of partying and manpower necessary to complete missions. With the new Guildleve setup, players can enjoy battle for experience or reward as a solo venture or with friends! According to Square Enix, a player who has accepted a Guildleve can invite friends to join without their friends, having accepted the Guildleve from the NPC. Each person in the party will reap the reward upon completion of the Guildleve.
